Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to be an experienced coach to volunteer?

• While many of our coaches are experienced and have played netball themselves, we also have parent volunteers who are not necessarily netball players, but are good at teaching the skills necessary for players to develop.

Is training provided?

• Yes!  We offer training and will provide you with drills and games to help you develop your players.
• All coaches have access to Sport Plan, which is an interactive website containing netball drills.
• We provide online resources.
• We will also reimburse you for part or all of your expenses relating to coaching education (if you wish to do this) ie: Department of Recreation and Sport courses:  "Essentials for Coaching Children" ..."Community Coaching General Principles" etc

What is required of me?

• You will need to complete a background Working with Children and compleete and on-line child safety course "Play By the Rules" (25 mins duration online).  Both of these are free.
• You will need to commit to being available to run a practice session once per week for one hour, and coach games on Saturdays for the season.  Being punctual to practices and games is a must!
• Communicating with your team and parents is one of the most important roles of the coach (and managers).  If you are not a good communicator, it is fine to ask another parent to take on this role.

What are the benefits of coaching?

• You will get to pick your team's practice day and time.
• If you are a parent, you will get to spend quality time with your child, on the netball court.  This can be a great time to bond with your child.

What do I need to volunteer?

• Simply email our Club Secretary grangenetball@gmail.com stating that you would like to coach your daughters team.

In the past, we have had many first time coaches who have taken the leap!  Having reflected with these parents (both mums and dads) and carers, they have indicated how much they have enjoyed the experience and how rewarding it was.

I thank you for your support with your child's team and hope you will join us in making Grange Uniting Netball Club a successful and fun netball club for our youth.

All coaches are supported by a team manager, and mentors can be organised if you wish.

Our summer season is a little more relaxed. The minimum commitment for summer is to attend weekly games as per the age group schedule.

The club are happy to provide active coaches with a membership to Sportplan to assist with training drills / skills.
Netball SA also various drills that they find online. 
Netball SA also have many coaching courses available.

The club will provide a $25 financial assistance for those wishing to take a foundation course, please contact the club if you wish to know more. Netball SA regularly have coaching courses available thoughout the year.

It is important to note that Grange Uniting Netball Club is governed by the policies of The South Australian Uniting Church Netball Association SAUNCA. Refer to the links on the SAUCNA website for the Main Association rules and regulations here.

Winter - Player movement between teams is sometimes necessary.  Please refer to our policy regarding temporary player movement – i.e. filling a team which is short of players in a particular week. 

As a general rule, we will pull from the team below if numbers allow.  If a team has a bye, players may be asked to fill in for another team. 

If a fill in is required please contact the club at grangenetball@gmail.com as early as possible and preferably with at least 24 hours notice. 

Please do not reach out to friends / school mates to find fill ins throughout the winter season.  The club need to ensure appropriate and fair processes are followed for winter and all players are registered, and also provided with the opportunity to play in a higher team to assist with their development. 

Summer Season - as teams are either friendship based or existing players from winter extending their learnings into Summer is acceptable.

Winter & Summer Seasons: All fill in players will need to be registered on PLAYHQ and meet SAUCNA requirements such as cannot play for another club, cannot play in the same competition in another team.

All fill ins must be registered, player fees are applicable after 5 matches. 

Winter - The current Grange policy states that each player must play a minimum of ½ game in the minor round but must have played an average of ¾ of all games played in the minor round.

Each player must play a minimum of ½ game in finals.

Please keep a record of court time and positions played for every player over the season.

Under 8, Under 9s or Under 11 team
Coaches, we ask that you please rotate the girls. Allow them to experience every position during the season. Under 8 and 9, the players are really still developing their skills and understanding of positions on the court so it is important that they all play every position – coaches responsibility to encourage this. 

Under 11 players should be experiencing various positions on the court as well so please allow this to occur as it is vital for development.

• Players shall not wear adornments (jewellery, bobbles, combs, metal headbands, hair beads, earrings, studs or other accessories), including those plaited into the hair.
• Piercings cannot be taped; they must be removed. Players are NOT permitted to play with piercings of any type.
• Diarth piercings, in the ear/s, may be worn once a medical certificate has been presented to the Association Secretary and permission received in writing.
• A wedding ring may be worn, but only if it is taped.
• Umpires shall ensure that each player has short and smooth fingernails before each player is permitted to play.
• No player shall play with long or sharp nails under any circumstances.
• As per the rule book (5.1.1 (iv)(d)), hair must be suitably tied back.

SAUCNA Appendix B – Hot Weather Conditions

• The onus is on each club and each team to be aware of this procedure and to watch for such an announcement.
• If the Hot Weather Conditions are invoked and matches are cancelled, no points will be awarded for that round of matches.

Winter Competition

• Matches for the day will be cancelled if the predicted temperature during the day is deemed that it will be too hot to play by the SAUCNA Board or relevant subcommittee.
• It will be announced on the SAUCNA Facebook page and the SAUCNA website no later than 9.00am on the day of the matches.

Summer Competition

• Matches for the night will be cancelled if the temperature is deemed that it will be too hot to play by the SAUCNA Board or relevant subcommittee.
• It will be announced on the SAUCNA Facebook page and the SAUCNA website no later than 4.30pm on the day of the matches

Major Round (Finals) – Winter and Summer Competitions

• If Major Round matches are cancelled due to hot weather the following will apply:
  • For Semi Final matches: the following week there will be two matches played
    • The team in first position will play the team in fourth position, and
    • The team in second position will play the team in third position.
    • The winner for each match will progress to the Grand Final.
  • For Preliminary Final matches: the higher ranked team will progress to the Grand Final.
  • For Grand Final matches: each participating team will be declared joint Premiers.
